We All Know Forums Can Be Angry

As part of my podcasting duties on LOTRO Reporter I’m often poking around in the forums to find the latest news. If I let it them, reading game forums would suck all the joy out of my day and my gaming. I had a feed of the LOTRO forums in my Feed Reader for a few weeks. I gave up on it and deleted the feed because I couldn’t take it. The titles alone were making me not want to log into such a horribly broken, evil, out to ruin everyone’s life game. LOTRO isn’t broken it’s a wonderful game. Is it perfect? No. Is it the worst thing out there? No. If your only exposure to any game is through the forums you would think it was running around kicking puppies and taking candy from babies for fun.

Negative angry forums are not anything new. I’m quite sure the first forum was full of negativity. I know what forums are like, and I normally avoid them unless I’m looking for something specific.

I’ve been feeling particularly sensitive about this subject for the last few days. The biggie was the Player Council announcement. It took only six or seven comments before the first negative one showed up. Further down on the first page was a comment in response to a previous comment that was so over the top in reaction with anger that if someone had spoken to me like that in person, I would have kicked them out of my house. I feel a lot sympathy for the Player Council members. They didn’t sign up for shenanigans like someone putting up their player sheet and ask if you would want this person to represent your server.

I know it won’t do a bit of good to ask for kindness from the forums. I would like to ask the few people who will read this to take a minute and send a thank you or a congratulatory note to the Council Members on your server or to your favorite Community Manager. They could probably use some positive words about now.

Leveling Guide from Rorgg for LOTRO Reporter

Rorgg Leader of Jesters of Landroval was kind enough to put this leveling guide in LOTRO Reporter’s Episode 180 Comments. We didn’t want it to get lost so I volunteered to post it on my blog.

Thank you Rogg. This is a most helpful guide.

Getting Excited for What’s Coming In LOTRO

Jumping

I’m getting excited for what’s coming this year in LOTRO. Turbine has had a lot of news released in the last couple of weeks. They made it to their Sixth Anniversary,  announced the first Player Council Members, let us know the My.LOTRO site was getting some big changes, Update 11 is live on Bullroarer, and their fifth expansion Helms Deep (Probably Update 12) is coming later this year. Let’s take a look at each of these news items.

Wow six years of LOTRO. I remember hearing about the game when it was in beta. I watched someone streaming the game for a few minutes, and thought wow that looks like fun. I was too nervous to try an MMO when LOTRO first came out. I’m sorry now I didn’t give it a try at launch. When I heard it had gone FTP, I downloaded it, and haven’t looked back. Thank you,Turbine for bringing Middle Earth to life for so many of us.

The Player Council was introduced to us on 4/26. I wrote a post on my early thoughts about the community reaction. I’m excited at the possibilities of the  Council. I hope this grows into a group that helps Turbine hear from all types of players.

The My.LOTRO site is getting some big changes. I’ve heard from players on both sides of the fence. On one side they are happy for the changes since the current version of My.LOTRO doesn’t work well for them. On the other side are players who aren’t happy about the system changing because, ironically, the system never worked for them and they are afraid the new system may be worse. If Turbine can get a site that doesn’t log me out all the time, take 3 clicks to get to the page that I need, and move faster than a slug, I’ll be happy. I am concerned about the possible loss of the guides and the blogs. Hopefully people will save those and post them other places.

Update 11 is coming. I’m excited to get another  year update. There look to be some good changes coming to the game. We get a new area to explore. It looks to be a snowy area. LOTRO does cold snowy areas well. Forochel for all it’s slow questing was a beautiful area. There’s a big change in housing coming. I’m not yet clear if foreclosure means the homes will be available for purchase again or not. I hope they are. I’m really excited to see where the Epic takes us. I need to finish up Hytbold before the update hits so Alinniel had better get busy.

Helm’s Deep is coming. Woot!!! I’ve like so many other players have been waiting for this part of Rohan. I’m crossing my fingers and toes and using my Horseshoe that it lives up to our expectations. I’m interested to see how Level 10 players are going to be able to contribute to the war. We’ll have to wait and see until, I’m guessing, this fall.

In general I’m seeing lots of things to be excited about in LOTRO. I’m just waiting to march on Helm’s Deep. I wonder how many players will be looking for a box for Gimli?

LOTRO First Player Council Well Wishes

The very first LOTRO Player Council was announced today. Seventy players from across the servers where chosen. Congratulations too all of them, and better luck next time to the ones who were not chosen. I’m sure this first Council will represent the players as a whole very well.

I also want to wish the Council and Turbine good luck. It’s only been a few hours since the announcement went out, and already the forums are complaining that their particular play style, geographic area, or server being under represented. Some comments have washed their hands of the whole endeavor already. To me it seems some of the commenters have forgotten that this is the first player council, we have no information about the effect this may have on LOTRO. I suggest the community give it a few weeks or months before we start complaining or calling this venture by Turbine a failure.

We don’t yet know a lot of things. We don’t know what types of things Turbine will be asking the Council about. We don’t know if Turbine will even be able to implement the Council’s suggestions within the framework of the game’s system. We might not know if and when changes are made and whether or not those changes are a result of Council input.

We can hope. We can hope that Turbine listens to the Council’s concerns, and will be able to move resources around to give attention to the areas that are brought to their attention. We can hope the Council can work together to bring solutions that will work to Turbine. Because of the NDA we as a community can hope that Turbine chooses to share the decisions the Council comes up with.

I wish the Player’s Council the very best of luck. I sincerely hope you all have thick skins and lots of patience. I know you realize that we are a passionate bunch who love this game, and not all of us choose to be negative. I will be bringing my suggestions to those I know on the Council in a constructive way, and I hope the community as a whole chooses to do the same. These people are volunteers who signed up for this because they are passionate about the game, and the lore. They didn’t sign up to be beat up on because you as don’t like a decision Turbine makes. That’s what the forums or e-mails to the Community Managers is for.

I Hit 85 in LOTRO

Only four months after Riders of Rohan launched, Alinniel hit level 85 this week. It didn’t take nearly as long as I thought it would take. It’s nice to be at level cap well before the next expansion is announced.

I’m kind of excited to rebuild Hytbold. Watching the phasing occur with the choices I make is neat. I really can’t wait to see what he town looks like restored. I finished a quest and suddenly the Mead Hall exterior went for scorched to like new. It’s also nice to be able to get raid level gear without raiding. I’m sure there are raiders who would disagree.

I still have quests left to finish in the landscape. I’m glad that there isn’t another expansion breathing down my neck and I can take my time to finish those up while doing the Hytbold dailies. Between these two things and leveling another character on Brandywine to keep up with my LOTRO Reporter hosts will keep me busy for a while.

Oh and I have a pink War-steed.

Long Time No Write

Wow it’s been almost two months since I last blogged. I’m really not sure how that happened. Time just slipped away from me, and I’ve been busy. I can’t even say it was particularly real life that got in the way. Time slips by so fast, and suddenly it’s been months since you last shared your thoughts with the people who take the time to read your blog.

Blogging consistently is a habit, a habit that I haven’t yet gained.

Nothing particular has called me back to blogging. No angry rant or gushing new love. I’ve thought about opening up a file and starting a post several times in the last few weeks. I didn’t take the step to do anything about it though. I’m fixing that now.

Here are some of the things I’ve done since I last blogged.

I’ve attended most of the festivals in LOTRO. I missed the Ancient Mariner event. I did it last year so I don’t feel like I missed much.

Guild Wars 2 came out at the end of August. I have a level 36 Sylvari Thief. I’m really enjoying the game. I’m taking my time and doing map completion while going through the areas. The game is great fun. It’s a small chuck of time game for me.

Final Fantasy XIV is closing down soon for the 2.0 reset. I’ve finished the quest line that prepares you for the end of the world. I’m looking forward to A Realm Reborn at the beginning of the year. This won’t be my main game though.

I attended PAX Prime. I had an absolute blast. I attended the MMO Reporter party on Thursday night, the Turbine party on Friday night, as well as all three days of PAX. It was really nice to meet other MMO players, and put faces with names and voices.

That’s it for now. I have a few posts stewing in my brain. There will be more Glimpses coming soon.

The Farmer’s Faire

Well the Farmer’s Faire is upon us. If you haven’t checked it out, I highly recommend you read Casual Stroll to Mordor’s guide when you do. They put out the best festival guides. It’s a fun festival, and really lends itself to role play if you are a hobbit. Though I’m still a bit ambivalent about the festival. There are several quests that take no time at all to complete, and are dailies. However, there is one quest that depends on other players not to mess up or troll to work correctly. So far I haven’t been able to complete it. And the wall of text from the NPC’s in Byewater is way too dense.

The fishing quests are fun, but still slightly broken. If you complete the quest the time is a regular daily reset, but if you fail it’s a hard 24 hour reset. They are also completely random. If many people complete the quest “Fishy, Very Fishy” I would be very surprised. I’m not sure you should be able to stand still and keep fishing up barter fish. Though I’m glad you can since the cosmetics, horse, and housing items are on the expensive side.

I haven’t done the egg or the mushroom quest too many times. I’m just picking up the tokens and saving them until the middle of the festival when there shouldn’t be so many people playing those games. That’s my hope anyway.

The cosmetics are amazing. They have several new held items such as a lantern and egg basket. I’ve got to have them all. Thankfully I have a wardrobe so I only need to earn one of each of the cosmetics.

I hope to see you at the festival.

What I did in Games July 22 – July 28, 2012

It was such a busy week in games that I didn’t have time to take good notes about what I accomplished.

Alinniel did attend the BBB concert in Bree on Sunday. There were so many hobbits in the band this week they attempted to sell some to the audience. I attempted to rent Aegthil the Rose Rockstar for the princely sum of 10 silver. It’s way more than he’s worth if you ask me. However, he has disappeared. I’m sure he’s in the Bree jail, but I refuse to check or pay the bail.

I made the acquaintance of a fine upstanding hobbit lad named Wilbet. He worked very hard to earn enough respect (levels) and slivers to be eligible to purchase a home. He’s all set to move into the new LMB housing neighborhood when it opens up.

Wilbet and Ali

I played the Guild Wars 2 beta weekend event. I rolled both an Asura and a Sylvari. I loves me the Sylvari. The Sylvari don’t have those plastic doll faces like the human and norn have, and their hair is rocking. I have a feeling that’s what my first character will be at launch. Still no idea on the profession though. I reserve the right to change my mind before August 25th. I made sure I was online for the BWE ending event. It was ok. It was a take on the hunger games. I was hoping to see a dragon. I’m not good at PvP that’s for sure. The outfit they put us for the final event was was way cool.

These shades are cool.

Cari Mac ran around Eorzea with her Linkshell getting all but three of the Aetherytes. That’s what they get when they allow players to make events on the website. We did the grand tour, and some of us died many times. It was a blast. Some of those make up your own goals events are the best. I also did one of the new skirmishes on Thursday. That’s fun. I got to see some of the monsters I haven’t had a chance to see yet. I also got to wear my bikini in the ocean waiting for the reset after victory.
